"Dear Coach Tonya, Coach Jerry and all the BMod staff, A note to let you know how much we appreciate you
and your wonderful program: Our delightful daughter Georgina, now seven, began working with Coach Tonya almost two years ago.
Undiagnosed, except for the educational labels of mental retardation and severe expressive language delay, she began her time
with Coach Tonya with a much bruised face and virtually no expressive language. Her protective response of putting her hands
out to prevent her nose being smashed into the floor every time she fell, which was very frequent,( hence the bruised face),
was not yet in place. Georgina was pretty uncoordinated, had low muscle tone, very little core strength and her balance was
very limited. She began working with Coach Tonya in September of 2005 and within a relatively short space of time her core
strength and balance improved immensely, she learned to jump two feet together on the trampoline, walk unaided along a balance
beam and do forward rolls . Her overall physical strength and balance has improved immensely and she no longer has a horribly
bruised nose! Even more importantly than the huge physical improvements Georgina has made, under Tonya’s skilled and
gentle guidance she is learning to motor plan, listen and follow a string of directions, make choices and communicate more
effectively. Coach Tonya gets Georgina talking by expecting her to respond verbally to her questions and also expects her
to complete the choices she makes, even if she chose a non preferred activity because it was the last thing she heard or the
easiest thing for her to say. In short Tonya is an incredibly gifted coach, intuitively knowing how to get the most and the
best out of Georgina, her knowledge is immense and the passion for what she does is obvious to all who encounter her. Georgina
has grown tremendously during her time with Coach Tonya we are so lucky to have found the program and would recommend it whole
heartedly. Georgina loves to “go play” with her friend at the gym, she has no idea how hard she works there and
how much she has learned , but we do, Thank you so much." - Love Jan Maddison
Our BMod Fitness unit, run by Jerry Bennett, is focused on providing behavioral and fitness coaching and helping people learn how to learn with
Play. The development of the Behavioral Sensory Integration (BSI) [Patent Pending]
approach, developed by Jerry and Tonya Bennett, has allowed the Discovery Services Group to offer every family that
has a member in need of specialized coaching an opportunity to participate and learn socially acceptable behaviors while simultaneously
becoming better fit and in more control of their own body. The BSI and Fitness program principals were developed
integrating knowledge from the fields and areas of psychology, physiology, sports medicine, special education, leadership
development and occupational therapy. The BSI and Fitness program is applied in an integrated approach tailored
to each client and capitalizes on incidental learning opportunities in a dynamic sports environment
The purpose of the BSI and fitness social skills groups are to provide an appropriate social context
within a dynamic environment which provides stimulating sensory inputs while allowing BSI and Fitness coaches
to capitalize on incidental learning opportunities. Participants in the program will:
- Develop healthy fitness regimens and goals based on individual body types, needs and age.
- Learn and spontaneously utilize socially appropriate greetings with peers and coaches/facilitators.
- Learn and apply socially acceptable waiting skills during turn-taking.
- Learn and apply helping skills by assisting peers.
- Learn interactive play skills with peers.
- Learn and apply
language skills with both peers and coaches/facilitators.
- Learn joint cooperation
and decision making skills.
- Work on sensory deficits with peers through modeling.
- Develop healthy self-confidence and self-esteem.
BMod Fitness Unit expects that participants in the social skills groups will generalize skill sets
learned into other environments such as school, playgrounds, work spaces, etc. Participants should be able to demonstrate
skills worked on during the groups in approximately three classes, provided there is appropriate opportunity for
participants to utilize these skills in the environment outside of BMod Fitness Corp. control.
BMod Fitness Unit capitalizes on incidental learning opportunities to increase socially adaptive behavior thus by
proxy decreasing maladaptive social behavior – all classes incorporate several elements, with specifics being dependant
on the opportunities presented in the dynamic environment. As a minimum all participants will be exposed to social opportunities
with peers, both diagnosed and other (kids taking mainstream gymnastics classes) and with coaches. In addition, all participants
are exposed to various sensory stimuli – behavioral responses to the stimuli dictate the coaching response and learning
opportunities, including use of language to indicate feelings or desires. Additionally, all participants will be exposed to
opportunities for teamwork through the use of relay races, helping one another out of the pit or through an obstacle. Curriculum
also includes coaching participants to learn to vocalize discriminative stimuli to their peers, in lieu of the coach providing
(i.e., one participant will be telling the other what tricks to perform on the trampoline), in addition to learning to encourage
their peers in the completion of a variety of sensory tasks.
Discovery Services
Group social skills groups occur within mainstream gymnastics facilities. The BMod Fitness Unit currently conducts groups
within five gym locations in southern California. The facilities are state-of-the-art modern gymnastics training centers
running recreational and competitive gymnastics programs. All equipment is regularly checked and serviced for safety. There
are parental observation areas in all facilities.
Attendance requirements
for participants:
Participants are recommended to attend a minimum of
(1) group per week.
Absences may be rescheduled.
BMod Fitness Unit provides families with scheduling flexibility, allowing an ability to schedule social skills group
classes around personal family schedules, through staffing and hours of business operation.
BMod Fitness Unit staffs social skills groups at a 1 coach/facilitator: 3 participants ratio.
BMod Fitness Unit operates Monday-Saturday, 6am – 8pm except holidays. BMod Fitness
Unit operates class schedules in 2-month sessions. BMod Fitness Unit requires new customers to undergo an incoming evaluation designed to assess behavioral operating level, language capacity and use, motor planning and motor organization
levels. Evaluations are free of charge. Participation in Discovery Services Group social skills groups is dependent
upon a demonstrated ability to function within our environment in a safe manner without requiring constant handholding while
waiting or moving between areas. Participants must also demonstrate that they can understand appropriate receptive language.
Motor planning and motor organizational abilities are not detriments to group participation, however they may play a role
in group placement.
In order to better serve
our customers we are now accepting Gym Transfer Requests from any currently registered customer. Registered customers may choose from any of our five Gym
locations in Southern California. As always we are working diligently to accommodate our customers requests. Please
fill out the Gym Transfer Request Form if you wish to transfer from any one of our gym locations to a different gym location. The associated
Gym Manager of the location will contact you regarding your request.
